Monrovia Hair Colorist
At BLU Salon, we believe that exceptional hair color is found at the intersection of artistic vision and chemical precision. We don’t just apply color; we understand the molecular interactions that occur within the cortex of your hair.
To ensure the integrity of your hair fiber while delivering unparalleled vibrancy, we have curated our color bar with two scientifically distinct product lines: Color Space™ for our foundational permanent and demi-permanent work, and Good Dye Young (GDY) for high-impact vivids.
Below, we break down the technology behind these choices and how they work to preserve your hair’s lipid barrier and protein structure.
The Science of Color at BLU Salon
Best for: Gray coverage, dimensional balayage, natural lifts, and rich, permanent tones.
We choose Color Space™ because they have re-engineered the oxidation process to respect the hair’s natural pH and structural integrity. Standard permanent hair color relies on an alkaline agent (traditionally ammonia) to swell the cuticle, allowing oxidative to penetrate the cortex. While effective, this can often lead to “thermal shock” and cuticle damage if not calibrated correctly.
Color Space™ differentiates itself through Micro-Dye Molecule Technology and a scientifically calibrated ammonia scale.
1. Micro-Dye Penetration
Instead of relying on aggressive cuticle swelling with high alkalinity, Color Space™ uses micro-pigment molecules. Because these precursors are physically smaller, they require less cuticle distension to enter the hair shaft. Once inside the cortex, they oxidize and expand, locking into the protein structure for longevity without the structural fatigue associated with older dye technologies.
2. The Science of “The Stop”
One of the most critical phases in our color service is the cessation of chemical activity. We utilize the Color Space™ Stop Liquid, a specialized cuticle sealant. In a typical color service, even after rinsing, residual alkalinity can leave the cuticle slightly raised, leading to moisture loss and color molecule slippage (fading).
The Stop Liquid uses an acidic pH to neutralize residual alkali and halt the oxidation process immediately. This snaps the cuticle scales shut, locking the micro-pigments inside and restoring the hair’s isoelectric point (its ideal pH balance).
3. Ingredient Profile
The base of these colors is formulated with Oleic Acid and plant-derived lipids (such as Jojoba and Moringa). Scientifically, these act as biomimetic agents—mimicking the hair’s natural sebum to lubricate the fiber during the chemical expansion, reducing friction damage and maintaining elasticity.
The Vivids: Good Dye Young (GDY)
Best for: Neon, pastel, and hyper-vibrant creative color.
For our vivid creations, we utilize Good Dye Young. Unlike oxidative color, GDY is a Direct Dye system. This means it does not require a developer ($H_2O_2$) or ammonia to work. It functions through the physical phenomenon of adsorption.
1. The Physics of Direct Dye
Direct dyes consist of large, pre-developed chromophore molecules. Because these molecules are too large to penetrate deep into the cortex like oxidative dyes, they rely on ionic attraction. The porous surface of pre-lightened hair carries a negative charge, while the conditioning agents in GDY carry a positive (cationic) charge. This electrostatic attraction allows the color to bind securely to the cuticle layer and the outer regions of the cortex.
Note: This is why pre-lightening (bleaching) is scientifically necessary for vivids. We must first deplete the natural melanin in the cortex to create a “blank canvas” and increase porosity, creating the binding sites necessary for these large pigment molecules to adhere.
2. Conditioning as a Delivery System
Vivid colors are often applied to hair that has been compromised by lightening. GDY formulates their dyes in a heavy cream base rich in Sunflower Extract (Helianthus Annuus) and Bergamot Essential Oil.
Sunflower Extract: Rich in ceramides and Vitamin E, this extract helps smooth the cuticle scales down over the pigment. It acts as a UV absorber, which is critical because direct dye pigments are more susceptible to UV degradation (fading in the sun) than oxidative dyes.
Bergamot: Beyond fragrance, Bergamot oil has mild antiseptic properties that support scalp health during the coloring process.
Our Commitment to Integrity
Whether we are performing a complex double-process correction or a simple root retouch, our approach is always governed by the laws of chemistry. We prioritize the preservation of the Cell Membrane Complex (CMC)—the “glue” that holds your hair cells together.
By using Color Space™ to minimize cuticle swelling and Good Dye Young to deposit vibrant pigment in a restorative cream base, we ensure that your hair leaves our salon not just colored, but chemically respected.
